It depends on the size of the area, the number of zones and how the site is built, so every quote is done after an on site look rather than over the phone. Either way the price is fixed, written down with the inclusions listed, and the quote itself costs nothing.
In most cases the buried pipework is still fine and the failures are at the surface: worn nozzles, sunken heads, tired solenoids and an obsolete controller. Those are all replaceable, which makes a refurbishment far cheaper than a full new install. You get a straight assessment either way.
